Guide To Buying Mirrors
Question 1 - What thickness or guage mirror should I opt for?
Silver mirror glass comes in four guages or thickness – 2mm, 3mm, 4mm and 6mm.There is no legislation governing the guage to use when hanging your mirrors on a wall. We strongly advise that you follow our recommendations as laid out below but ultimately it is your choice
Plain Mirror
It is our opinion that commercial applications should use 6mm silver mirror glass with safety backing film applied. 6mm silver mirror is stronger than 4mm mirror glass and therefore is more robust and less likely to damage in a commercial and potentially more challenging environment. In addition, 6mm silver mirror glass is not prone to "flex" which could cause distortion in the reflection when mirrors are adhered to an uneven surface. This effect is certainly possible on uneven surfaces when adhering 4mm silver using mirror adhesive and needs to be identified as a potential issue prior to any installation. 6mm thick mirror allows the use of our aluminium J channel hanging systems which are the simplest, most attractive and cost effective hanging solutions we offer. Furthermore most insurance companies demand 6mm silver mirror glass in commercial situations for liability insurance. All commercial building specifications and drawings that we receive from architects and professional specifiers state 6mm silver as standard. For peace of mind in our unfortunately litigious world, we consider the use of 6mm silver mirror as the only sensible and viable commercial choice for businesses.
For reference purposes safety backing film is a film that we apply to the reverse of the mirrors to prevent injury from glass in the event of breakage. It is fully tested to BS EN 12600 class B2B for frontal impact. The broken mirror pieces stay stuck to the safety backing and do not end up on the floor and dramatically reduce the chances of someone injuring themselves on broken glass.
Residential clients can and do use 4mm silver mirror glass and it is our best seller into this market sector. However it is our recommendation to use 6mm silver in sizes 2440mm x1220mm (8ft x 4ft) for the added strength it brings and the minimisation of "flex" if you opt for the mirror adhesive hanging option. This is your decision to make. Our aluminium J channels do not take 4mm silver and many customers ask us to drill holes into the mirrors which we are happy to do but these are not as easy to install than either using adhesive or J channels.
Framed Mirror
For commercial environments we strongly recommend a minimum of 4mm silver in framed products up to 1000x1000 and that the extra is paid for safety backing. For residential mirrors we recommend 3mm mirror as suitable. In some of our budget mirrors we have used 2mm mirror but only on sizes 500mm x 400mm and below.
Question 2 - What about acrylic mirror compared to glass mirrors?
We get a large number of enquiries every week asking whether acrylic mirror is the same standard as glass mirrors. We do stock acrylic mirror sheets, however these are not comparable in quality or longevity as glass mirror.
Acrylic mirror easily flexes and bends and it is very difficult to avoid a “distortion” with anything over 800mm in size. Experienced laminators have tried to bond the material to MDF and the results are always the same - the results resemble more of a fairground mirror than a gym mirror. In fact it is acrylic mirror that is used to make fairground mirrors.
These products are only suitable in smaller sizes or where a mirror effect is required with safety in mind, such as shopfitting. Ideally they are for use where the health and safety concerns outweigh quality concerns such as in  hospitals, planes, prisons, schools or in certain outdoor circumstances such as garden or stable mirrors. We are always very sorry to hear when customers come to us having already been sold acrylic mirror by competitors, being led to believe it would be fit for purpose and seeing the disappointing results for themselves.
Question 3 - What quality can I expect?
All our mirrors are of the highest quality and adhere to the following recognised standards –
EN 1036-1 Glass in building - mirrors from silver coated float glass for internal use - Part 1 Definition, requirements and test methods.
EN 1036-2 Glass in building - mirrors from silver coated float glass for internal use - Part 2 Evaluation of conformity and product standards.
All mirrors we use are produced in factories with ISO 9001 certification.
What is your cutting tolerance?
The industry-wide accepted tolerance and our cutting tolerance is +/- 2mm for mirrors, glass and plastics
For framed products the tolerance can be + / - 10mm
What are your quality standards?
All glass contains various types of flaws or blemishes, which may be visible to the naked eye. This is unavoidable - even the finest raw materials contain minor flaws. The Glass and Glazing Federation mandates that no defects should be visible in the glass when it is viewed horizontally or vertically from 1.1 metres away under normal lighting. All of our glass meets these standards.
All mirror and glass products adhere to building regulations and BS and EU standards where required.
Question 4 - What mirror processing options are available and what do they mean?
Cut to size means just that, we can cut and process any mirror sheet up to 3210x2250. You will see on the site that we limit your ability to purchase any mirror sheets larger than 2440mm x1220mm (8ft x 4ft). The reason for this is the handling requirements due to the weight of the products and the subsequent associated delivery considerations. A 6mm silver mirror 2440x1220 weighs 45kgs. When you start going bigger than this there are many health and safety issues to consider. If you really do want to exceed these sizes in single sheets please submit your enquiry using our custom enquiry function. Someone from our office will get back to you within 24 hours Monday to Friday.
We supply very large quantities of raw cut mirror glass to the trade. When working with raw cut glass and mirror you will need to have the appropriate PPE (wrist guards, gloves, goggles) and the appropriate risk assessments and training to safely handle these products safely. We do not recommend these products are used by anyone who is not a professional. They cannot be used as a wall of mirror as the sharp edges will be exposed. We do offer a painted or printed MDF frame solution which is a very popular and attractive finish. This plain cut mirror is suitable for this application but generally we install these items ourselves as there is more to the measure and site survey than it may first appear.
Just be very thoughtful as to whether you actually want raw cut mirror before you buy. Please do not be surprised to receive a telephone call after placing an order just confirming again you understand what you are buying so forgive us in advance. We do not want you to be disappointed.
A polished edge is where we use diamond grinding wheels to remove the sharp edges and then a cerium polishing wheel is applied to create high quality, clean finish. We strongly recommend all mirrors are supplied with polished edges. Our polished edges are a high quality D edge "flat" polish. It means the edges are not sharp and they are attractive when viewed on their sides. We chose this flat D edgework for this type of product so the mirrors are able to butt up perfectly to each other creating an almost seamless join.
A bevel is where the glass is ground away at an angle from edge and then these worked edges are highly polished creating an attractive secondary mirror reflection effect. It is used a lot in art deco installations and we provide bevelled mirrors as standard in all our framed mirror products. Even though we can bevel your mirrors, our experience is such that we know that gym or dance mirror customers do not generally opt for this effect. The majority of bevel work we have conducted for this market sector has used a smaller 10mm bevel. As such this is what is offered as standard as the effect is more minimalist and cleaner. If you want a larger bevel please send a custom mirror enquiry.
A radius corner is where we round the corners of the mirrors and is done for safety reasons as opposed to aesthetic. All the corners are rounded and polished off with 25mm radius unless you specify otherwise. We generally do not do this work for this sector as it spoils the effect of a wall of mirrors. However it is sold regularly into home dance studios where children are playing.

Question 5 - What options are available to hang my mirrors?
LARGE FLAT MIRRORS
The first question you need to ask yourself is what is the state of my wall? If the wall is perfectly flat then all options are available. If the wall is not perfectly flat you may be able to use J channels (see below). It is also important to check the floor, ceiling and skirting boards - they may look level but are they? It is important these issues are dealt with prior to fitting your mirrors. If you are not sure then we recommend seeking the advice of a reputable local builder.
Hanging Option 1 - J channels
These are aluminium channels that are drilled to the walls and slotting the mirrors into them. To fit you them you simply drill the bottom rail into the wall at the appropriate height ensuring it is level before commencement. Once in place you slot one mirror into the bottom channel and mark 3mm above the top of the mirror. This is where the top channel is to sit. Once the top channel has been fitted the mirrors are slotted into position by using the additional rebate of the top channel to slide them in. Each channel is 3.66m long. It is important the wall you hang the channels onto has the integral strength and support to hold them - a stud wall without drilling into the supports could not take the weight.  The pros are it is cost effective, simple and quick to install, it offers a professional and high quality finish, it is easy to replace a damaged mirror and the mirrors can be moved at a later date. The cons are it is only available in 6mm thickness and the walls need to be checked for wall integrity.
Hanging Option 2 - Adhesive
Some people question whether the mirror adhesives can hold the mirror weight. As long as the wall surface is non porous and cleaned prior to installation the mirrors will stick. In fact that is the main problem with this solution - once they are on, they are NEVER coming off.
The adhesives take a few minutes to set off and require two people to position the mirror and hold it during this period. We also recommend you prop them with something such as a baton for 24 hours just to be sure.
It is VERY IMPORTANT you use specialist mirror adhesive if you opt for this solution. Other adhesives could attack the paint protecting the silver on the back of the mirror and it will cause your mirrors to degrade over time - in some instances very quickly indeed. In general you require one tube of mirror adhesive to properly adhere one gym mirror. Simply apply the adhesive to the back of the mirror with special attention paid to the areas without safety backing. We leave areas in the mirror free from safety backing as these hold the mirror to the wall itself - the safety backing does not adhere well with the adhesive and would fail over time. If you are gluing onto a wall it must be totally flat otherwise there is potential for flex (especially in 4mm thick glass). The pros are is it cost effective, simple and quick to install and offers a clean and high quality finish. The cons are the mirrors cannot be moved, two people are required for installation and replacements in the event of damage require more remedial work to put right than other solutions.
Hanging Option 3 - Screws
We will drill 7mm holes into the mirrors and supply chrome cap screws to give a professional finish. The pros are the mirrors can be moved again in the future and it gives a high quality and professional finish. The cons are it is difficult and time consuming to install, especially if creating a wall of mirror. The integrity of the wall needs to be considered to ensure the screws in the wall can hold the mirrors. The integrity of the mirror itself is weakened during the drilling process. Finally it is the least cost effective hanging solution we offer.
It is VERY IMPORTANT that you do not screw too tightly into your mirror holes. If you do the mirror will crack.
Remedial Solutions For Uneven Walls
We suggest two types of remedial wall work in the event the wall is in very poor condition. You can either plaster the wall to ensure it is perfectly flat OR fix flat board onto the walls to create a flat space to attach the mirrors onto.
FRAMED MIRRORS
The key consideration in respect how to hang these is to ensure the walls are strong enough to take the mirrors if they are very heavy. To calculate the approximate weight of a large mirrors use 15kg per m2 to calculate. In addition for commercial situations you may want to use security fixing which stop the mirrors being taken off the wall.
Please visit our mirror accessories for the various fixing units.
Question 6 - How do I measure my wall for mirror and glass?
A lot of people may think it is rather easy just to measure a small or large space but beware as there can be lots of hidden hazards that are not always seen with the naked eye. The most common problem that occurs is that the space you require your mirror to fit is not perfectly square. Failure to identify an area being longer even just by a few mm on one side, this is known as a "rake" and can cause disappointment when you try to fit your mirrors. Take your time when measuring to properly survey the area, especially if you are totally filling a wall with mirror or glass. In such circumstances it may be worth using the help of a professional builder. Areas that are not totally filled with mirror obviously allow for more margin of error on the measure and as such should be straight forward to measure.
As previously mentioned you also need to consider problems like bowed walls, uneven floor and skirting, sockets that require cut outs and the surface material and the methods of fixing. It is recommended you seek professional advice if you are unsure of the integrity and strength of your walls from a local builder, prior to ordering. If you require cut outs for ballet barres, sockets, radiators etc. it is vital your measurements are correct - for peace of mind we recommend you outsource this work unless you are totally confident as this does require skill and experience. We will manufacture what we are told to - but if the measurements are incorrect the mirrors will not fit and money has been wasted. Think carefully on this decision.
For a professional finish it is always nice to use the largest size mirrors for a seamless look and consider   "symmetry" if creating a wall of mirror. Either all the mirrors are the same size, which involves wastage to be calculated and is marginally more expensive or the most cost effective method is to use our stock promotional sizes and have the two end pieces cut to size. All our promotional stock sizes are easily identifiable on the site - 1830mm x915mm (6ft x 3ft) / 1830mm x1220mm (6ft x 4ft) / 2140mm x1220mm (7ft x 4ft)/ 2440mm x 1220mm (8ft x 4ft).
Another important factor to consider is the maximum size mirror you choose. You need to make sure that the mirror sheets can fit through doors and openings. Larger mirror glass is more difficult to handle and as an example a 2440mm x1220mm 6mm silver mirror sheet weighs 45kgs. We recommend you keep to this size or smaller because of this weight issue. Anything larger introduces more risk and requires specialist equipment. Anything over 2440mm x 1220mm is only supplied in 6mm thick silver mirror glass.
You need to check that the mirrors have access points -
Where does the delivery van park?
Is it safe to move the mirrors or does there need to be consideration of other business / public?
Will the mirrors fit through the doorway?
What is the safest and easiest route to take the mirrors to the proposed installation location?
Finally you need to consider storage of the mirrors prior to fitting them to ensure they do not become damaged. This is very important as mirrors should be properly stored on metal racks for safety and we recommend you install your mirrors as soon as possible. You must consider if there is any health and safety risks associated with the storage of the mirrors prior to installation and take the appropriate measures.
DO NOT STORE THE MIRROR FLAT ON THE FLOOR. Mirror sheets are best stored on the edge of the mirror and we recommend you use a suitable floor covering to protect your mirrors while stored. Leaning the mirrors against the wall can damage the wall so again place some protection if you are using this method. Common sense is required but it is best to have this planned prior to arrival of the mirrors to ensure the best decisions are made.

Testimonials
  •  Hello I recently bought 2 mirrors off of yourself, I'm really pleased with both the price and product, you were by far the cheapest quote from many other glass companies and the delivery was brilliant, the mirrors were used on a bespoke wardrobe install I have just completed for a client of mine, here's a couple of pictures of the finished product..
  • I would like to say that the whole experience in buying from you guys was easy, uncomplicated and very fast. The Gym mirrors are great and very easy to install, delivery driver was very good, obviously knew how to handle the glass carefully and was very helpful, I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending yourselves to others.
  • I bought two pieces of glass as shelf tops. They were 'low ion' glass which is crystal clear. They were both cut extremely well and fitted perfectly. The communications with the vendor were fantastic - very very helpful. The delivery cost was a little pricey for small items, although glass clearly needs to be sent safely. Despite that, I would definitely use again.
  • Extremely pleased with the mirror cut to size for my bathroom renovation project. the service, delivery and overall quality of the product was superb. Definitely recommend to all my friends
  • Fantastic from start to finish, delivered  no probs, Installed them on my own no probs at all. Used 3 for my kids dance studio. They are made up!
