Balustrade Glass Panels

If you are buying glass for a system purchased elsewhere all the details as to your glass specification are supplied by the supplier of the system and not the glass company so before buying check your specifications with this supplier.

For those building a bespoke system or repairing/ upgrading a system the information below is guidance only and you must satisfy yourself the glass selection is fit for purpose as we accept no liability for incorrectly purchasing the glass specification.

No handrail or side mounting - Any system with a fall height over 600mm must use toughened laminated glass and have a design where if the glass breaks there is no VOID in the system for someone to fall through. Using toughened laminated with clamps and security pins - you must buy holes for the pins when you purchase this glass - means the pins will hold the glass in position in the event of breakage. A fall height under 600mm means the system does not require compliance with building control regulations. The clamps we supply can hold 1200mm wide panels with two each side. If you need longer panels the clamps cannot hold this and the glass will also become weaker in the centre. In such instances you could consider adding clamps to support the panel on the bottom. We offer clamps for use with 13mm toughened laminated and these require an allowance of 22mm - for example a panel 1000mm wide would need to be purchased 956mm wide to allow for the clamps. If side mounting, even with a handrail, the main issue is injury to someone if broken glass were to fall on them. In such instances by using toughened laminated and clamps with security pins this issue is negated. Also if you decide to move change a system to include a handrail you can view our range of handrail fittings here /balustrade-parts/

Handrail - Toughened glass can be used with a handrail as the assessment is that in the event of breakage the handrail is still in positon to stop someone falling through the void. We offer 10mm clamps for internal and external use. Max width for use with two clamps each size is 1200mm. If you need longer panels the clamps cannot hold this and the glass will also become weaker in the centre. In such instances you could consider adding clamps to support the panel on the bottom and on the top of the glass onto the handrail. We offer clamps for use with 10mm toughened internal and external. For panels oversize you could also consider using 12mm glass and clamps for additional strength but the same size limitations are to be considered but the central weakness point becomes stronger moving to the thickner selection.
